Buffleheads, goldeneyes, wood ducks, and mergansers rely on tree cavities for nesting. Not any tree cavities though: they need an entry hole that’s just the right size for each species, a cavity that’s just the right depth and diameter, it can’t be too far from the water, and there can’t be any big branches on the approach path to the cavity.
With the generous support of the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP), we’ve been working on relieving some of the pressure on the Anatidae housing market through the construction, installation, and maintenance of duck nest boxes and floating nesting island throughout the Peace FWCP area. Our monitoring has shown very high historic utilization rates, which makes us confident that we’re making a tangible difference for a lot of ducklings.
